Bird Photography is intensely satisfying. First there is the joy of simply being outside, in nature and amongst the birds. Then, there is the satisfaction of viewing your images and creating your own piece of art.

We are fortunate in that Australia is home to some of the world's most iconic birds with almost 900 species on offer, many of which are found nowhere else on the planet. The variety of species ranges from small birds such as the tiny Weebill, to the larger birds of prey such as the Wedge-tailed Eagle and the well recognised Emu.

The Bird Photography Workshop, held over two sessions, is perfect for beginning to intermediate photographers wanting to learn more about their cameras and for gaining a good understanding of the principles and techniques involved in bird photography.

We cover the techniques to get the most out of your camera and tips on bird behaviour that will improve your chances of taking images that you'll be proud of. In addition, we will cover some of the essential post processing techniques for bringing your beautiful bird images to life.

BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

So, what is bird photography? It is a genre of photography that challenges you, your equipment and your patience. But at the end of the day you are rewarded with the opportunity to be out in nature, a chance to learn more about the lives of birds and hopefully the opportunity to capture that one great image.

The Bird Photography Workshop is conducted over two individual sessions: The first session starts in the classroom and is focused on the principles and techniques of bird photography followed by a couple of hours of putting what we have learned to use as we photograph the various species that call the South Coast Headlands of Ulladulla their home. Our second session will involve retuning to Headlands in the morning for an additional opportunity to practice our bird photography techniques followed by some additional time in the classroom to explore the post processing techniques for editing our bird images.

Session 1

There is no denying that Bird Photography is one of the more challenging photography genres. There are so many aspects to consider; the gear, the camera settings, the light, composition and of course the behaviour of the birds themselves, just to name a few. Our first session will begin at 10am in the classroom and will focus on the skills and techniques required to capture stunning bird photos. At noon we will make our way to Ulladulla where we will have a brief lunch break with a variety of options available. After lunch we will then spend the next couple of hours honing the skills we learned in the classroom as we photograph the variety of birds that frequent the Ulladulla  Headlands that often includes: New Holland Honeyeaters, Wattlebirds, Superb Fairywrens, Variegated Fairywrens, Pelicans, Honeyeaters, Galahs, Corellas and Rainbow Lorikeets to name a few. If we're lucky we may even come across the Glossy Black and Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos.

Our goal is not to photograph as many species as possible, but to capture the best possible images of the species available.

Session 2

The second day of our bird photography workshop will begin at 7am when we head back out to the Headlands to continue fine tuning all the skills learned in day one. After a brief lunch break we will return to the classroom to run through a bird photo editing presentation followed by an opportunity to edit one or two of your favourite images form the weekend.
