Getting Control of Exposure & Focus
- Description
The technology in today's cameras is so excellent, that you could be excused if you wanted to keep the camera permanently set to Auto mode. However, it order to be truly creative with your photography you need to switch it off of Auto and take control of your creativity.
Our time together is all about getting to understand and be comfortable with the the features of your camera that will allow you to unleash your creativity.
This weekend workshop is more detailed than our 1 day Photography Essentials workshop and offers us more time to explore additional camera settings and to consolidate our new skills in a beautiful seaside setting.
PHOTOGRAPHY ESSENTIALS CONTENT:
DAY 1 - Arrive at Noon
Photography with Intent
Our weekend begins by arriving at Merry Beach Caravan Park at Noon with an opportunity to introduce ourselves and share a nice lunch together. After checking into our accomodation we will get together and begin our afternoon session.
Before we even press the shutter button there are a number of things that need to be considered. The best photographs begin with a deep breath and a little thought.
- The difference between pictures and photos
- Photography with intent and the art of slowing down
- Considering the light
- Identifying your subject
- Composing the image
At the conclusion of the presentation we will have time to explore and photograph using the new skills discussed in the session.
DAY 2 - 9am Start
This session is a combination of presentations, worksheets that will help you to identify your camera features and practical exercises to help you to consolidate the theory.
Exposure
One of the foundation principles of photography is Exposure - capturing the light and the tones. Understanding how to manage exposure is an essential photography skill.
- Understanding Exposure and Correct Exposure
- Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO
- Camera's Metering Modes
- Depth of Field, Motion, Noise
- Exposure Compensation
- Exposure Bracketing
- Exposure Lock

Focusing
Another important technique to understand in photography is the concept of focus. If you don’t focus properly, you will end up with blurry photos even when all your other camera settings are correct (unless of course you make a creative decision to blur them!)
- Understanding your camera's focus points
- Selecting the Focus Area
- Moving Focus points
- When to use the various focus modes
- Focus and Recompose
After dinner we will get together to discuss some of the options available for processing your images and sharing some of your best images from the day's session.
Day 3 - Sunrise to Noon
Putting it all together
Day three is all about applying the concepts we covered in the first two days. I will be available 30min prior to sunrise for those that wish to get up a bit earlier and capture the morning light.
